Getting ready to sell your home? Remember first impressions can make or break the sale. If you want to get top dollar for your home you need to put a good amount of effort into making it look inviting. It is easy to get overwhelmed and confused about where to start and what to do. Good thing there are plenty of professionals out there eager to help you prep your home for a sale. Who are these professionals and what can they do for you?
You might think that when you are staging your home for sale you have to empty the space then hire a fancy home staging company or interior designer. This is not always the case. You might just simply need a professional organizer in your corner. So what is the difference between a home organizer and an interior designer/staging company, you wonder? A few things. Unlike a home staging company that you rent furniture and decor from, or an interior designer that wants you to purchase all new items, a professional organizer is going to help you declutter and then showcase items that you already own. As a professional organizer my job is to assess and reimagine the items in your home. Countless times my clients wanted to go out and buy all new storage to house their collections. This is when I reign them in. Nine times out of ten the clients have everything they need, and then some, by the time we are done donating and decluttering. By bringing in a professional organizer you are not only making your home feel inviting to buyers, you are also prepping for a stress-less move into your new home. A home stager profits by placing cookie cutter items from one home sale into the next, whereas a home organizer works out what fits, functions and flows in the space for the sale, and what needs to be packed away for your new home. So next time you are thinking about selling your home and need to get it staged, remember your local professional organizer will give you more bang for your buck. A great tidbit I learned from the restaurant industry is called F.I.F.O. First in First Out, is an easy way to remind one to rotate inventory every time new inventory comes in. This is a great, easy to remember trick for keeping an organized home too.
First in First Out (F.I.F.O.) will make you stop to think about what has been pushed to the back of the closet, cabinet, garage or any number of places in the home. Go ahead and start pulling out the old and bringing in the new. You'll feel the difference. Get in the habit of rotating your possessions and you'll see in no time that your home has become fit, lean, and fun. Let's visit the kitchen pantry together. What would we discover? Maybe some out of date potatoes? Possibly several expired can foods? A few ingredients you're holding onto to make that dish? You know the one which you really won't get around to making because it isn't your favorite or takes to much work. If you're like most people you are shaking your head yes. Today why don't you give the fridge and pantry a face lift. See what you have, get rid of expired items, and take inventory of the items purchased. A good habit to get into is checking your fridge and pantry before shopping in order to avoid over shopped crammed shelves and drawers. Keep it F.I.F.O. from know on. Having an organized home takes consistent effort. You can't expect to work out once a month and be fit and tone. Unless you are 5 or won the lottery gene pool. Very few of us have that much luck, so we all benefit from tips, tricks, and positive effort. I have been called "naturally " organized, but in reality I keep my home fit and lean with effort. When areas get out of control I make a point to put aside the time to exercise my organizing muscles. This guarantees that my favorite clothes don't get buried or pushed to the back of the drawers or closets. So get up and practice your organizing muscle with F.I.F.O in mind. Happy Organizing! It just feels good to B Organized Today (get it LOL). It's nice to be in a space that’s open, airy, and functional. However, organizing can be quite a challenge at times. Especially when more than one person (or little persons) lives in the home. So how do you get everyone in your home on board with getting and staying organized?
First off, keep in mind who else uses the space. Bring them in on the organizing ground floor. Ask them questions like; "Do you think this will work here?" "Should we donate this?" "Does this work for you?" By going through the journey of organizing as a team, knowing where things belong will be a group decision. Having everyone on board means they will always know where things are and where to put them back. Start small when creating new systems in your home. One section at a time. Let the newness of this organized space sink in. Then start on the next section together. Remember a complete overhaul of your home will take time, support, and a plan. Make sure you get everyone excited about the new organizational systems so it will remain that way. It's normal to have a some hiccups for the first few days when getting used to the where everything belongs. Now that things are set up to accommodate the way everyone in your household lives, it will soon begin to naturally make sense. Wondering how to be more organized?
