Do what works for you

Wondering how to be more organized? Do you wish your home felt more like a hotel? Well first off you are your own person, you have your own life, your own habits, your own strength, weaknesses, desires and dreams. Why do you want to live like your only staying for 7-14 days? Today is the day to be get organized for how you and your family really live.

First, start thinking about what makes sense for you. For example, if you are decluttering and reimaging your kitchen think about what you do in there most. If you often make crockpot meals, then why have pots and pans as the closest thing at hand? Do you have a ton of spices spilling in your cabinet, then get a 3-teir spice shelf to easily find what you need. Who cares how a gourmet chef would have their kitchen set up if all that matters to you is having healthy smoothies each day.

The key to decluttering and organizing is figuring out what makes sense for the flow and function of your home. When learning how to be more organized, don't forget how you use your space. Not all ideas are mainstream and that’s ok. If your hall closet is only filled with shoes, because that is your obsession, who is to say that is wrong (as long as they are kept neat and tidy)? Consider organizing your office according to hobbies. My office is my meditation room, coloring center, music space, and workspace. Is that for everyone, of course not, but it makes sense to me. Does anything else really matter?

Is your home office in your living room, due to lack of space? Find furniture that can due double duty for the living room and office. Like this wooden work cart that can be used to house paperwork and be rolled next to the couch to double as a cup holder. Thinking out of the box when it comes to getting organized is a true necessity. Getting organized in small spaces can be a challenge but it can also open the door to creativity and beauty.

Don’t underestimate wall space or door space too. Over the door shoe hangers with pockets are good to hold everything from pantry items, bathroom accessories, and toys. Oh my! Always losing your keys? A simple hook by the door is an easy, inexpensive way to keep them where they belong. Just remember to put them back if you want them hanging there when you need them.

Most of us don’t have a house that looks like Martha Stewart lives there. Maybe it is small or it has a weird layout. No problem, step back and take a look to decide how it can work best for you. I bet you will find that the your household function and flow will unfold in an unusual ways. But that’s what makes your home, and you, unique.
