As a professional organizer I often get asked if my house is perfectly organized. Of course the answer is Yes!......and No. It's a constant battle. I've only lived in my home for the past year but I have been through my closet on more than one occasion because I have accumulated a bunch of new things. My pantry looks completely different than it did when we first moved in. Every room has been re-arranged or moved around.
You may think I am spending a crazy amount of time on organizing, but have you considered how much time I'm saving? With my belongings "pruned" I don’t have to deal with the weeds because I'm constantly picking them at their root. Which is way easier than waiting until I'm overrun by them. I don’t go out and buy fancy new things, I work with what I have. I find new uses for forgotten or little used items. You'd be surprised how functional old things can be in a new space. Next time you're feeling overwhelmed by clutter, take a few minutes to weed through your stuff. It doesn’t have to take all day or all week. If you take the time here and there to deal with it you don't have to worry about it getting out of control. If you just ignore the stuff month after month, year after year, you will find yourself in a mountain of clutter and a mountain of pain. So I challenge you to take 5 minutes a day and go through a drawer or a closet and see how easy it is to keep the weeds at bay when you're consistently pruning. Think of it this way, what if you never cut your hair? It's going to keep on growing whether you do or not. Organization is the same way, if you never attend to it, it will become unruly before you know it. But if you maintenance it, it will stay orderly and fresh. Now go forth and organize!
